Tavern Action

Well, we usually post summaries of our Tavern Talks here, but we have something special to share, and actions speak louder than words.

On a recent Sunday afternoon, some Tavern-ers got together to put their faith, their heart, and some goodwill into action. We agreed to provide 150 sack lunches for the East Tuscaloosa Community Soup Bowl.

Everyone helped out in their own way, kids and adults alike. Some went shopping, others organized, others planned, and others gave. Then, we all gathered to put the lunches together. After praying a blessing on those who made it possible and those who would be fed, the organizers amongst us took over and the process began. We had allowed two hours to assemble these lunches. We finished in 48 minutes. Hats off to planners! And to everyone who helped!

The East Tuscaloosa Community Soup Bowl provides hot meals during the week and sack lunches on Sundays. Folks line up behind the Alberta Baptist Church for the meals to be distributed at 2:00 p.m. We arrived early to set up and to visit with the customers or clients. We now call them friends. What beautiful smiles and warm hugs and handshakes greeted us.

Everyone was able to get at least one lunch and multiple drinks, especially the children who could take them to school the following week. When it was all done and the cooler sat draining on the then-empty sidewalk, it hit all of us who were there. We were reminded how good it feels to do something for someone else. God wired us that way for a reason. How soon we forget.

We were putting action behind the words we revisit practically each time we meet– love God with all your heart, mind, and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. We agreed to provide lunch once per quarter going forward. Someone’s already planning the meals, but we would love your help.

There’s no need to wait on us, though. Do something for someone else today.
