Tavern Talk #92 - Living Water

Water is so common that we rarely stop to think about it. We turn on a faucet, fill a glass, or watch the rain fall without considering that every known form of life depends upon this extraordinary gift. Scientists begin their search for life elsewhere in the universe with a simple question: Is there water?  No water, no life.

With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that water flows through the pages of Scripture from beginning to end. The Bible opens with the Spirit of God hovering over the waters of creation and closes with the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God. Along the way, water becomes a recurring symbol of God's creative power, provision, deliverance, cleansing, and grace.

The August Tavern Talk explored this remarkable thread through the biblical story - Noah and the flood, the crossing of the Red Sea and the Jordan River, water in the wilderness, and the psalms and prophets, to the ritual immersions of ancient Judaism, the baptism of Jesus, and Christ's invitation to receive "living water." These stories reveal that water is far more than a necessity for physical life; it becomes one of Scripture's richest images of the spiritual life God offers through Christ.

Perhaps the simplest takeaway is also the most profound: pay attention.

The next time you drink a glass of water, stand in the rain, or walk beside a river or lake, remember that your life depends upon a gift you did not create. In the same way, the deepest needs of the human soul are met not by our own efforts but by the grace of God, who continues to offer living water to all who thirst.
