Tavern Talk #79 - Masterpieces in the Hands of the Artist

Have you ever wondered what it means to be a work of art? Scripture tells us that God is not only our creator, but also an artist - shaping, painting, writing, and weaving each of our lives with purpose and care. We find ourselves not just created by God, but continually being formed by God. This is both comforting and challenging: we are not finished yet, but we are never forgotten. In every brushstroke of joy or shadow of pain, God is creating something beautiful. We are the masterpieces.

Clay sculpture and tools on a table. Text reads: "Masterpieces in the Hands of the Artist, Tavern Talk #19." Creative, artistic setting.

God the Artist

The Bible is full of creative metaphors for God, not just as a creator, but as a potter, a painter, a poet, a weaver, a builder. We are the medium: the clay, the canvas, the poem, the frame. A masterpiece in waiting for the divine artist.

Remember the verse we sang about on Sunday? (The song is linked below!)

Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” — Isaiah 64:8

In short, we are being formed. Shaped. Refined. Sometimes broken and reworked. But always held in the hands of an artist who sees not just what is, but what could be.

This can be freeing, but it also calls for trust and faith. Because clay doesn’t shape itself. Canvas doesn’t pick its palette. And sometimes, life feels more like smudges and mistakes than a masterpiece. But maybe that’s not failure. Maybe that’s just part of the process.

The Divine Drama: Life as a Play

Imagine this: God isn’t just a visual artist.

  • God is the playwright crafting the story of redemption, grace, and hope.

  • Our director (Jesus) shows us how to live it out.

  • The stage manager (Holy Spirit) prompts, equips, and encourages us.

  • The cast? That's us.

Sometimes, our lives are solo performances. Other scenes are filled with other cast members. We’re part of an unfolding drama that is sacred, unscripted in places, and deeply meaningful.

Our roles may change. Our scenes may feel small. But we are always on stage, and the curtain hasn’t fallen yet.

You are a work in progress. You are a character in a divine story. God creates masterpieces, and you are one.
